Frugal innovation boot camp

Frugal innovation is the process of reducing the complexity and cost of a good and its production. Usually this refers to removing nonessential features from a durable good, such as a car or phone, in order to sell it in developing countries. Designing products for such countries may also call for an increase in durability and, when selling the products, reliance on unconventional distribution channels.
In this dynamic and action oriented innovation boot camp, you are tasked with prototyping solutions to a real life challenge.

The Prospect of Immortality

LOCATION: Stadsgehoorzaal Leiden | ENTRY: FREE | TIME: 10:00 - 22:00 | LANGUAGE: ENG | ORGANIZER: Brave New World / Leiden+

In 1962, Robert Ettinger published 'The Prospect of Immortality', the book that gave birth to the idea of ‘cryonics’ – the process of freezing a human body after death in the hope that scientific advances might one day restore life.

Fifty years later, between 2006 and 2016, Murray Ballard has undertaken an extensive photographic investigation of the practice Ettinger inspired. The photographs take the viewer on a journey through the small but dedicated international cryonics community, from the English seaside retirement town of Peacehaven; through the high-tech laboratories of Arizona; to the rudimentary facilities of KrioRus, on the outskirts of Moscow. Worldwide there are approximately 200 patients stored permanently in liquid nitrogen, with a further two thousand people signed up for cryonics after death.

The project combines photographs of the technical processes involved, alongside portraits of the people engaged in the quest to overcome the ‘problem of death’.

Institute of Human Obsolescence

LOCATION: Stadsgehoorzaal Leiden | ENTRY: FREE | TIME: TBA | LANGUAGE: ENG | ORGANIZER: Institute of Human Obsolescence

Machines are outing us. As it happened some time ago to horses after the invention of the steam engine, humans are becoming obsolete to perform mechanical labour. Soon, with the advance of artificial intelligence, it will also affect our possibilities to be useful workers performing intellectual labour.
The IoHO explores this scenario and tries to ask questions on how to reposition the role of humans in society, particularly how to cope with a labour-market dominated by machines.
The IoHO is going to present three new installations that complete the series Data Production Labour, and is going to host workshops analysing aspects of daily usage of technology.
